External Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids often feel like a painful lump hanging outside the anus. Although less common, external hemorrhoid are often more painful and can be more threatening especially if the blood within these vessels clots. This condition is known as thrombosis and it must be treated immediately. Acute thrombosis is a painful event, which usually lasts about one or two weeks.

It very often occurs after a specific event like diarrhea, physical exertion, constipation, or a change in diet. Merely removing the clot does not help if the underlying vein is weak. That is why external hemorrhoids also tend to crop up at the same place, sometimes even after treatment.

"Its no rare thing, for the Hemorrhoidsal Veins, to be distended, and Even Corroded, by the Resort of a Blood full of Acrimony thither. A grievous pain accompanies it; with an Inflammation. And oftentimes a Flux of pure Blood follows…. The Seat of it, in the Parts of Dishonour, which can't be mentioned among people of any Breeding without a sort of Blush, seems to oblige the Sufferer unto Self-Abasement."
