Prevention and Self-care for Vaginitis
|
Vaginitis is a very common and recurring condition in women. Practicising safe sex and observing some simple hygiene can prevent repeated attacks of this disease. Some simple steps include:
1. Avoid soaking in bathtubs, or taking a very hot bath: Rinse your vagina carefully to remove all traces of soap, which can cause allergy. Scented bath bubbles and strong antibacterial soaps can inflame the sensitive vaginal lining. Stick to a single brand of birth control, if you notice irritation with new brands. Also use unscented soaps and creams that are bought for children.
2. If you are prone to several attacks of vaginitis in a year then you should avoid nylon panties and tampons. Wear loose fitting cotton clothes and panties and stay away from tight jeans for some time. Double rinse your panties after washing them.
3. After clearing your bowels always wipe from front to back, this prevents the bacteria from entering the vaginal opening.
4. Stay away from frequent douching, this can harm and irritate the lining of the vagina and disturb its natural environment causing the yeast and bacteria to overgrow.
5. Ask your partner to wear a condom as this can prevent the infection from spreading.
6. Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Water helps in washing out the bacteria from the system. It is also advised to eat plenty of yogurt (which contains the live culture). Yogurt has the friendly bacteria called lactobacillus, which is very helpful in fighting a yeast infection. Avoid very hot weather and climate and change clothes immediately after swimming.
7. Applying a cold compress and washing the area with cold water reduces some of the burning and itching. You should also remove your panties before going to bed in the night. This will also provide relief from the itching and burning sensation. |
